13 killed in Bungoma horror crash

Thirteen people died in a gruesome road accident, which occurred Monday night (December 11) at the Kamukuywa Bridge black spot on the Webuye-Kitale highway.

Confirming the accident, Bungoma North OCPD Eliud Okello said the 13 were traveling to Webuye from Kitale in a 14-seater matatu, which rammed into the rear of a tractor transporting sugarcane.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the tractor had slowed down as there was a stationary lorry ahead when death came knocking.

The 14-seater matatu was reportedly being driven at a high speed when the driver lost control, ramming into the back of the tractor, killing 13 on the spot and leaving one passenger seriously injured. The passenger was rushed to a Bungoma hospital.

The road accident occurred between 7pm and 8pm.

Bodies of the 13 – as at 10:20pm Monday –, were being moved by the police to different morgues in Bungoma County.
